Last year, we started a series highlighting the amazing Lilt employees (or Liltonians, as we like to call ourselves). We’re excited to continue that series this week with some of our recent hires helping to pave the way for a multilingual global future. Get to know more about the faces behind the work, their backgrounds, what makes them tick, and what makes Lilt the place for them.
Meet Judith Nursalim, a Software Engineer at Lilt helping to build the underlying technical infrastructure of Lilt and squash any issues that may arise. With a longtime love of language and technology, Judith is an experienced engineer helping to build the foundation here at Lilt.
As a software Engineer, my day to day revolves around coding, troubleshooting software issues, and attempting to solve technical problems. There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes on the technical side, so it's always interesting to dive into.
I really love to be in the water, go on long hikes around the area, and to get out and travel. I haven't been able to travel nearly as much recently due to the pandemic, but I'm really looking forward to getting back out and exploring new places.
Absolutely! Thinking back, since my native language is not English, a lot of the content I watched and read in my childhood was thanks to translation and localization. Even as I've gotten older, it's still fun to learn about translation and localization and see just how much of an impact language can have across various different cultures.
It's too embarrassing to list those that I've studied and have since forgotten. I'm a native Indonesian speaker, but I'm also fluent in English and can function in French and Spanish-speaking environments. I grew up surrounded by Arabic and Dutch and could read Hiragana and Katakana, a little Mandarin, and Russian and Bulgarian Cyrillic. I can also read the Hindi alphabet, know some basics in Turkish, German, Swedish, Italian, Greek, probably others that I've forgotten about as well.
Needless to say, I like language!
Not quite advice, but when I was little, I stumbled across Stephen R. Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in my Dad's pile of books. That's where I learned very early on to distinguish between importance and urgency - it's helped me to be more productive over my career and figure out how to focus my attention during the workday.
The opportunity to marry my previously unrelated interests: software engineering and languages. I've always been interested in languages, whether studying them or learning more about how they work. When the opportunity came to work at Lilt, it was a great combination of my personal interests and my career goals.
Humility. It cultivates great culture, collaboration and teamwork; resulting in both an enjoyable and productive environment to work in.
